Yesterday I conned my father-in-law to help paint so we were stuck inside. It was all brush work on a T&G pine panel gable ceiling and wall to wall T&G pine panel along one knee wall. It sucked.
Not much. Picked a half gallon of Blackberrries, put bird netting on a small peach tree, picked one ripe tomato, moved and baited a rabbit trap, and shut the drip lines of for a few days because of the rain we had. Also cut a few weeds down in the area where i am trying to start a self sustaining wildflower bed. It has lots of CA poppies growing there now, but i want some variety and a longer flowering season.
The wife baked a dewberry cobbler today. Thanks to Ranch for the recipe!
The dewberries around here started off well, but then they all shriveled up to nothing after all the rain. Never seen that before. We were able to get some good ones from Fayette county though.
We need to have a pie eating contest. Linda made me a big Blackberry Custard with about a quart and a half of berries and 6 eggs. That was several days ago, and i just finished the last of it today. That was the first one i ever had, based on Sam's custard pie recipe, but for sure, it is not going to be the last one.
I have not been outside yet, but i see i have trapped that rabbit. He apparently was a City rabbit and did not know what a raw carrot tasted like. So it took a while to get him used to eating them, so i could get him to go in the trap. The rabbit proofing job i did on the chain link fence was keeping him out of the garden but he was living under the neighbor's deck and coming over trying to find a way to get in my backyard.
Not exactly feeling like Daniel Boone this morning, but am pleased i finally caught him.
Dang it, we woke up to more thunder/lightning & rain... This is getting old.
Making 'German Rouladen' for supper tonight. It's a lot of fussing around, but it's sooooo good!
The sun finally came out this afternoon (humidity feels like 110%), so I grabbed the pear burner & dried the firewood racks, then let them cool & got them painted. It felt good to accomplish something after being cooped up for over a week, LOL!!!
Well in between little league baseball games and school functions I feel like I'm neglecting my garden. Did manage to pick some squash last evening and a few cherry tomatoes and peppers. Plan on pulling up the rest of the onions so that they can dry... (pitiful onion crop this year) and digging up the last of the potatoes this afternoon.
Transplanted one of my habanero pepper plants to it's new 3 gallon bucket home. This weekend I'm hoping to move the garden bed to it's new location and transplant my tomato plants as they are getting to be pretty large for their red solo cups.
Mrs. Ranch is planning a veggie dinner for the next couple of days, LOL!!! Green beans with potatoes & she's making a bowl of cucumber/tomato/onion salad She also had me strip 16 ears of corn & make bread to go with it.
Picked up a 4 briskets. One will be BBQ'd, one will be for ground meat & two will be frozen for smoking at a later date.
One of the neighbors stopped by to see our garden & get some 'tips' as he wants to start one at his place.
Well, out of the sorriest looking potato patch I have ever laid eyes on, we were able to pull this out just a while ago. I'm thankful for what we got considering how bad these plants were tortured this growing season.
Over night low was 44° F and the high was near 75° F. Tonight is supposed to be about 50 as a low and upper 70s again tomorrow.
Pulled the first things from my garden this year. 60 grams of lettuce and spinach mix which was topped with left over kabobs and chopped tomato for my lunch. Everyone at the table was amazed I had anything ready in my garden.
Separated the 'points' from the 'flats' of all 4 briskets, then vacuum packed 2 of the 4 points. I seasoned up the remaining 2 for tomorrow in the event that the weather allows me to BBQ. Also vacuum packed 3 of the 4 flats. The largest flat was ground & 39 (6.3 oz.) hamburger patties formed (I like this weight because they are true 1/3 pounders after cooking & fit my buns properly).
I was hoping to fire up the big smoker for the pastrami, the 'buckboard' bacon, the Canadian bacon & a brisket, however the forecast is not looking good enough to risk it. I'll just be patient & wait until mother mature cooperates...
