The storms did them in (broke over) so I figured it was best to harvest early than risk harvesting nothing due to rot. It was a shame that we missed the 6 weeks that is prime for their putting on size. No 2 pound lunkers this year...
Work on the area that has the firewood racks: cleaned it up by burning it out & then installed the H.D. ground cloth. Tomorrow I hope to set the concrete pavers & paint the racks themselves shortly thereafter so I can start stacking the wood.
Left the seedlings out for the first full day this season. High just above 70° F and getting light rain now. I also bought a six pack of bell peppers and a jalapeno seedling on my way home from work.
Ordered canning supplies (bulk packs of lids & rings) from Lehman's. That should hold us for a couple of years, LOL!!!
Refilled the hummingbird feeders... I may have to put up a couple of more as there a lot of them & they don't seem to be in a hurry to leave (must be the weather up north).
I set the concrete pavers in place, however I was unable to start painting the firewood racks as it is way too windy, so I opted to start back-filling the area with bull rock instead.
Sifted and applied vermi-compost to boxes for melons and tomatoes.
Transplanted beets from soil blocks to the raised bed.
Planted all 6 ornimental flowers I'll grow this year. White petunias in my red cast concrete planter out front. Have I told you guys about my planter? That thing is made to stop - or greatly reduce the kinetic energy of - a car. At least one car has run into this house.
It's a pick your own farm over in dickinson. Rows and rows of berries and lots of other veggies, fruit, herbs etc. Just call to see if they'll be open and what they have to pick. Super place! My fallback for stuff that I cant get to grow at home.
I had to pick my onions a little early this year, and it is taking them longer to cure than last year when i did not dig until most of the tops had fallen over. This year less than half of the tops had fallen, so now i know.
I mowed the grass and sprayed tomatoes and melons. First time i have grown Romano tomatoes and they seem to have much different needs than the slicing tomatoes, at least for me. The Romanos are begging for more K and the others have all they want.
About 15 or 20 avocados still on the tree about the size of medium olives, out of the hundreds that got up to 1/4". Book said i did not need to thin them, and now i know why.
Peaches that are growing on the Nectarine tree are starting to turn red, but still quite a ways from ripe.
Getting a few Blackberries but will have to start picking soon.
Rabbit managed to push some chicken wire aside on the latch end of the gate, so now i have a perfect place to set a trap, so may get him.
Surprising how small a crack a hungry rabbit can get through.
Picked my first tomato today, needs a couple more days on the windowsill but a nice big Early Girl. Still having problems with low K on the Romanos, and one other plant, so bought some super phospate, and soaked it in. Have no idea how long it will take to help or if it even will.
I have so many different soil types here, there is no use in soil tests, so i just have to watch for problem spots.
Different varieties seem to have distinct requirements, Plant i picked from today is magnificent, next to the purple tinged, humped over Romano. Will cut down next year to the varieties that do best this year. Always learning something new.
Will pick some blackberries this PM, not very sweet yet, but getting too black to leave them on much longer. Hard to pick when they get soft.
Liinda is going to make some Blackberry Custard, without the pie crust. That pie looked delicious.
Didn't do anything here... it was drizzling when I got up & it got progressively heavier as the sun came up. Total thus far is 1.17" with more on the way...
Planning on making a pizza for supper as there will be no grilling tonight.
Interesting morning. I was up about daylight and saw a rabbit in the backyard, so i shot it and while it was still wiggling a small falcon swooped in and tried to carry it away. The bird was not much bigger than the rabbit and dropped it after a few feet. Too far away and too quick to be sure of the variety. I have seen a small one around a few times but not for quite a while.
Then i picked a couple of quarts of blackberries, Did not get as bloody as last year, as i now use a thorn proof glove on my left hand to hold or move the vines, and pick with my right hand. More and bigger berries than last year.
Lower end of melon patch [heavier soil] getting too much water, so moved the drip tubes farther away from the plants in that area, as the melons on the higher ground are getting the right amount.
Tomato vines are losing the lavender tinge as they are taknig up the phosphate. Did a small job fixing a sunscreen for the Chemical bottles i leave outside, etc.
I just piddled around mostly. Fed the few snails that i have left, just in case a new crop emerges, found a couple more ripe tomatoes, tied up some melon vines, adjusted the timing on some drip lines, cleaned up the Garden Storage shed, picked a few limes, pruned off a few feet of grape vine out beyond the grapes so the energy will focus on the grapes and not on vine that will be pruned off this winter anyway. I have a long handled pruner, which has to be one of the handiest things i own. I can reach up without dragging out a ladder or can reach down and prune suckers without all the groaning that bending down to ground level requires. Next to my long handled moisture meter, that long handled pruner may be my favorite tool.
Calling for more rain today and tomorrow so I got out and mowed the grass yesterday. So nice having a shed now to put all the lawn equipment in and out of the garage!
We got lucky yesterday as both storms just brushed us. We ended up with just 0.38" of rain, while just a few miles north & south of us received 3" to 7".
Clean the ceiling fans & rearranged the family room back to it's summer configuration.
Smoked a pork butt for supper & made some stuffed japs.
Every year is a birding adventure here & this is the year for owls... We have seen both a Horn Owls & Barn Owls perch 15' away from our back porch while we have been sitting out there (they are huge, especially the horned owl). This year we have a barn owl that has been patrolling the garden & hay trap almost constantly... apparently we have a nest close by as we just saw the M/F & a 'baby for the first time!!! Mrs. Ranch is ecstatic!!!
Still raining here... Got another 0.50" yesterday while I was cooking supper & today we're suppose to get another 1.04". The grass in the yard is starting to rot...
Cleaned & refilled the hummingbird feeders.
Cleaned & refilled the wasp traps.
Work on my cookbook.
Pulled the 'Buckboard Bacon' out of the brine & vacuum packed it prior to freezing it... With all the rain, I won't be firing up the big smoker anytime soon...
We are finally getting a decent and very much needed, good soaking rain. It is about two months late, but better late than never.
So I am doing like they do in China when it rains. I am just sitting here letting it rain.
The baby barn owl reminds me, about sixty years ago, i was running a crane demolishing a brick school house and found a baby owl that had fell out of a hidden nest. I took it home for my little children to feed to try to save it, and that was the meanest little devil i have ever tried to raise in my life, and they can really bite when they are only a few days old. It finally managed to escape from its box and we never found it, but i will never forget it.
I have my onions spread out on some pallets to dry, and did not think to cover them up last night when i saw it might rain. They were almost dry, so i am hoping the rain will not harm them. I will check and turn as soon as the weather clears up.
