Got my water bill today, and relieved to see i have cut my water usage 40% YOY, as we have had a much cooler Spring. By not watering the lawn, i will be able to hold amount down, as weather gets hotter. This cool year has slowed both my tomatoes and melons. Last year my growth was similar to Sam's as we are in similar zones, but this year his melons are twice as big as mine, and my tomato plants have a lot of production left.

I find it interesting to read the details about the results we have in different areas.

Made roast beet hummus and walked the dog after renewing my drivers license.

Starting to look like I'll have another kid around here in 24 to 36 hours

Trimmed back the habanero and serrano pepper plants. Both have already started producing peppers like crazy.

You guys will understand this but few others will. I was walking thru the grocery store to get a sandwich and snacks for while we're at the hospital and saw a seed rack. Well that reminded me that I needed more beets. So I walked out with beef jerky, molasses cookies (Archway are the best commercially available), a roast beef sandwich, and a pack of Detroit dark red beets.

Pick jalapenos & a tub of tomatoes.

Made a pot of pinto beans & added fresh jalapenos, onions & tomatoes. Cilantro will be added just before serving...

Made another batch of stuffed jalapenos.

Fed cattle.

Continued cleaning up the garden (pulled up more corn & gave it to the cattle).

Trimmed the oak tree in the back yard.

Cut & burn a broken tree from the last storm.

Moved the potatoes & onions into the house.

Made bread. Tomorrow & need to make the dough for 12 loaves that I will bake on Saturday for a friend's birthday party.

Harvested another 3/4 pounds of pea pods. Harvesting while on a step ladder gets annoying. I grow pea pods in my raised bed and my cultivator grows about 7 feet tall. Maybe I could get drywall stilts...

Yesterday I made the bread dough & let in 'cold rise' in the refrigerator. I got up early & started baking them as the birthday party starts at 1700 hrs. Mrs Ranch made a large bowl of tomato/cucumber/onion salad to bring as well.. 125 people have RSVP'd.

Yesterday was the first full day home with the new-born Third-Yan. I decided that the other two kids - First-Yan and Second-Yan - needed a better place to play in the yard more independently.

So with that I moved the monolith of concrete blocks I had stacked up for some unknown project from here:

to here:

This is an area on the north east corner of the house between the sunroom, the privet hedge, back fence, and front landscaping. All it did was collect weeds so I covered it with concrete. Each of the stones is 4"x8"x16" of solid concrete and weighs about 50 pounds.

After the concrete was moved I spread another load of mulch and we put up the hand-me-down playscape.

While doing this I looked over the privet hedge and found that a neighbor was having a garage sale and there were chairs out in front so I walked over.

I scored three of these solid wood chairs in really good condition for $5 each.

HOW HIGH CAN A BRUSH RABBIT JUMP? I know that deer can easily jump a six foot fence from a standing start. I know an Antelope cannot jump a four foot fence. I know coyotes can both climb and jump a six foot fence. But i have never seen a rabbit jump more than about 2 feet high.

I have been meticulously rabbit proofing my chain link fences as the CA brush rabbits can squeeze through the chainlink openings. I planned to have my helper come tomorrow and spend as much time as necessary to find the hole a rabbit has been using to get in.

This morning Linda was outside, and one of our dogs flushed a rabbit, and it JUMPED OVER a four foot Chain Link Gate.

Have any of you ever seen rabbits, even Jack Rabbits jump that high?

Rabbits have extremely strong hind legs which allow them to jump pretty high. I have seen them jump 3' high barriers & land 10' from it..

Yes, I have seen them make long horizontal jumps, over bushes and such, but it was the vertical distance for such a small rabbit that i find amazing. I assume the square in chain link fence to be about 2 inches, and they can squeeze through there, so these are prett small animals to begin with. And they are starving so that makes them lean and motivated, so that probably helps.

YAN,
I do not know where you acquired your knowledge of Rabbits, but you are correct about how strong and mean they are. During WW2, when other meat was rationed, my Dad had a rabbittry, He had a big lot and as he was a carpenter he built lots of hutches, not sure how many, but at least a hundred and maybe 150. These were big meat rabbits, probably 6 or 8 times as big as the little brush rabbits.

I was following construction work on military bases, so i was only there for a few days at a time, but i would help him when i was there. And a Mother Rabbit with babies is just as mean as a Buck Rabbit that hates other Buck Rabbits. And sometimes when you are trying to breed them the Bucks and Does have terrible fights. They do bite with their teeth,, but do most of their damage with there back feet.

But to be comparable to what that rabbit did this morning,, they would have to jump over the house. I wish i had seen it happen.

Congratulations on that new baby.

@ErnieCopp That is a quote from the character Tim the Enchanter in the 1975 cult classic movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

And this was Third-Yan's reaction when I was telling her about my garden.

Picked another tub of tomatoes & roasted them (3 roaster pans total). The 'meat' will be vacuum packed & frozen for later use.

Pick some poblano peppers for supper.

Did the maintenance on the computers & made backups.

So I didn't put up a bird net this year and already I'm regretting it... I keep finding dog paws all through the raised garden. One of my labs have taken a liking to tomatoes both red and green ones.

Looks like I'll be putting up another net this evening to keep out the unwanted animals. ;)

I canned another 17 pints of tomatoes. 12 regular and 5 Rotel style ( note to self.. keep hands away from eyes while chopping Jalapenos). I thought I was done at that point and then my Mother in Law walked in with a half a 5 gallon bucket of figs. Guess I'm making more preserves this evening unless someone has any suggestions for other uses.. Ranch?? I sprayed something called CYONARA I bought at the feed store on my garden and I don't think there's a stink bug left in the county. I may glow in the dark now but I don't care.. the bugs are gone.

Picked green beans & spaghetti squash. We'll process the squash over the next couple of days & then vacuum pack/freeze it.

Applied leather conditioner to all my holsters & boots.
