Tilled for the last time (YEAAAAH!!!!) & then formed the rows in the garden (everything except the 'Melon Patch'). If the weather cooperates, I will start planting tomorrow...

If you wondered why I tilled 12 times, it was to kill any seeds & insects that may have been in the soil. Here is one of the 'volunteers' that my wife said to leave. The State Flower of Texas.

Today, the first thing I did was plant the potatoes. Then started planting the 'direct sown seeds'... the Kentucky Blue & Italian Roma green beans are in, followed by the cucumber & spaghetti squash. I also installed the 50 tomato stakes for the transplants & then watered everything in.

Tomorrow (weather permitting) I will plant the sweet corn, then start on the tomato transplants.

Planted okra, roma II green beans, cucumbers, and 2 hills of summer squash. Also transplanted 4 tomato plants and 4 bell pepper plants and watered everything in. Supposed to have rain this weekend and I hope we get a good soaking.

Finished planting all the vegetables yesterday. It started raining sometime last night & we are still having the gentlest of rains (.54" so fair) which is good for the seeds. Don't need any 'gully washers' for a few weeks...

Not sure what the deal is this year but I have a lot of small weeds sprouting up. Had to spend a good deal of time pulling them. I dont remember the weeds being this much of an issue last year.

Got my 4 tomato cages built and installed. I'm hoping with the spacing on the 'mater plants and also the large cages, that we get some big full plants this year. Also made a little trellis thing for my vining veggies to crawl up. I think we're in pretty good shape now. All the hard work is done so now just keep 'em watered and watch 'em grow.

Watered the garden (north wind is sucking the moisture out of the soil!!!). Then line-trimmed everything in the yard today.

I will cut the grass tomorrow...

I watered today too. I have lived in the Houston area since 1987 and I don't ever remember the wind blowing hard and constant like it has this spring.

Watered the garden right at daybreak (there was no wind). Then cut the grass, watered all the trees & filled the bird feeders. Watered the garden again after supper due to the wind.

Well I was enjoying my morning coffee & watching the sun come up with my family when Mrs Ranch asked "What are you going to do for me today?" Based on past experience, I just had a feeling that I was going to find out shortly...

Long story short, I'm going to be cleaning up her backyard flower bed. I will be highly supervised of course.

Sam,
Nice to have a pet cow join your family for coffee. Pretty happy with my garden so far except for tomato plants. Direct sown Cantaloupe and Persians popped up between 7 and 10 days but took two weeks for Watermelons. Glad i did it that way rather than start seeds or buy plants. Last year transplants did not do anything until the ground warmed up so these will be on the same track.

Not happpy with some of my tomato plants, not dying but not growing very much either. I think it may be cooler nights -50, and warmer days, + 80, so we will see. Got about 250% sprout on the Beet seed pods, but thinned to singles at the two leaf stage. Did not seem to disturb the ones i left. Carrots maybe 95+%.

Picking up another fifty Statice plants to make double the row i have now. Tried different flowers to pair with the first row and nothing has worked well, so willl just double the row i have. They are my favorites anyway.

Jap maples not doing as well as they should here. Not sure if soil not acid enough or just do not like the climate. They better shape up pretty fast or i am going to put Nine Bark trees where they are sitting.

I have my potatoes in 15 gallon black Nursery buckets sitting in the garden with two drip emitters for each container. Getting excellent growth so hoping for a better crop than last year with only one emitter per container.

Mr. Ranch, nothing is better than a sunny morning drinking coffee with your bride. Good looking dogs and cattle and a beautiful wife. I love seeing your pictures.

Have not been able to see my gardens today been here at conover,nc most of the day dealing with electricians,heat/ac
So they can go pull permits to finish up this store, now just waiting on the plumbers to finish up on doing their callback on some poorly installed toilets and install a drinking fountain.

Way things are going looks like I might have tomorrow off
My wife messaged awhile back the dogs were rough housing and tore the bottom out of the new plastic I put up the other week. Oh well something to do tomorrow the soil will be delivered Saturday morning so will be able to finish the potato beds.
